Frequently Asked Questions: Working as a J&J Independent Sales Agent

Q: What does an Independent Agent at J&J do?

A: Our Independent Agents broker freight for businesses throughout the U.S. and Canada. On a day-to-day basis, they rate loads, dispatch occasionally, cultivate new business, follow-up with current and prospective clients, track loads, and resolve any problems that arise. Because they generate their own book of business, a strong entrepreneurial personality, solid work ethic, transportation background, and excellent communication skills are essential to success.

Q: If I want to be an independent freight broker, why should I work as an Independent Agent with J&J rather than on my own?

A: Working entirely on your own can mean thousands of dollars in start-up costs. And unless you hire a support staff, you’ll spend a great deal of time on administration and paperwork—time we think you’d rather spend moving freight and making money.

When you work with us you have the support of a full administrative staff, the latest technology in the industry, excellent commission, you can use, as well as the support you need to be a success.

Working with us gives you the technology and benefits of our company, with the freedom and earning.

Q: I have a non-compete agreement with my current employer and am concerned about starting as an Independent Agent at J&J Logistics with no clients of my own. How can you help?

A: Non-competes are common in this industry, and we know it can be a challenge building a client base from the ground up.

When you start as a J&J Agent, We will provide databases of thousands of qualified leads to help get started. We also get inquiries from new potential clients through our online Rate Quote system, and we distribute those leads among all of our Agents.

If you have specific questions about a non-compete you may have with a current employer, please consult your attorney.

Q: How do I get paid?

A: Your commissions are paid Bi-weekly on the same pay schedule as in house employees.

Q: Can I work from home?

A: Yes. However, most of our Agents find they're more successful when they set up a small office outside of their home, away from distractions. When they're in their professional office environment, they can focus more on the job. And they like keeping their professional space and personal space separated.

Q: I'm working as an independent freight broker on my own now. Why would I be better off working with J&J?

A: Working with Network J&J virtually eliminates the administrative "back office" costs you have now.

Our staff takes care of most of your paperwork for you including billing, receivables, carrier payments, liability insurance and claims, so you have more time to focus on moving freight and making money.

We're also one of the few freight Brokerages that accept credit card and wire payments on behalf of your clients. It's more convenient for them and lowers credit risk.

You can also take advantage of our "quick pay" program for carriers to help you get trucks for your clients quickly. It helps you better utilize small carriers who need cash. And it establishes your financial creditability, which is typically lacking among other smaller brokers.

Q: Does J&J have a required minimum fee split?

A: No. Some companies take a minimum dollar amount on every load. For example, say your employer requires a minimum of from you on every load you move. If your commission is 50% (50% for you, 50% for them), and your gross profit on a load is , that company still takes , cutting into your commission.

Q: How do I apply?

A: Once we receive your Inquiry, we'll contact you within one week.

Q: I'm interested in the position, but I don't have any experience in the transportation industry. How can I get the experience I need?

A: Successful freight brokering is generally NOT something you can learn in a classroom setting. Hands-on experience in the transportation industry is the best way to help prepare you for a successful career as an Independent Sales Agent.

We recommend you start small and spend some time in house to learn the basics of freight sales.
